What are Nigerian bank Sort codes?
Sort codes in Nigeria refers to a unique identification code similar to Swift code, but different as it is bank specific. It is a nine digit code that identifies a particular branch of a bank. The first three degit of this 9 digit code are the bank’s standard code the next one is for the location, the remaining 5 digit are for the bank’s branch.
Each bank has it’s own unique code same with the bank’s branches scattered all over Nigeria, whether it’s East, West, South or North, it’s important you know that it’s not just the bank that have this codes but its branches. Which means for instance if you have an account with FirstBank Nigeria Plc Ikeja Industrial Estate Branch Oba Akran, Ikeja Lagos. The Sort Code of this branch that is in Ikeja is 011151883 i.e a total of nine digits. Breaking it down we have thus
code : 011 The code that is unique for FirstBank Of Nigeria
code: 1 This 1 is for the branch location, the state that it is in. In this case the figure 1 is used for FirstBank branches in Lagos.
Code: 51883 This code is for the particular location of the branch, in this case it is “Industrial Estate Branch”. Because there are many branches all located across the nation this code is subject to change, that is it will change once the branch changes, as one branches code is different from the other.
